Conclusion On Protect bios - Configuring a BIOS password in your computer system can ad an additional security barrier to your data in your computer but it is still not said to be absolutely secured until your computer is physically protected.
I always think that I should employ some extra security to my computer in the sense of BIOS. I heard about the BIOS password from my friends and they are using it as well as suggesting me to configure the BIOS password to my computer system in order to make my security barrier more complex. I dont know much about BIOS password. Can you tell me the merits and demerits of configuring BIOS password?
BIOS is the software of your computer which causes the booting of your machine. It is the Basic Input/Output System of your computer and configuring a password to BIOS definitely access an additional step to your computer’s security.
There is a limitation of the oprating system’s password that it’s aeasy to get an access to your machine by using a boot disk and rebooting your computer. To overcome this problem a simple manner is that you configures a BIOS password and ignor the boot disk. Now your computer just know to boot only from hard-disk.
In this case the demerit is that any person which is physically accessed to your machine can insert your hard disk in other machine and reset the setting of your BIOS, thus, it’s password.
In most cases, the configured BIOS password is required to boot-up the machine, What if you will forget the password? Even when there is no chance to recover the password. Well, Many machine’s provide the facility to access directly to the motherboard of the computer using a jumper or any other device to reset the password and get the accessment with your machine again. But the sophisticated part of the matter starts here that any other person can also do the same to reset your bios password. Thus you won’t meet your intension to keep your computer secure.
However these things also depends on the manufacturer as different manufacturers design the machine differently in the sense to the way to configure BIOS password or how to access with your machine without enterering the configured password. Even it may also happen that there is no chance to reset the password (useful for me if I can remember my password efficiently.) But the conclusion is that generallu there is no security if your computer is not physically secure.
