Conclusion On CMOS battery - Replacement of CMOS battery is not a big task but it’s not often needed as the batteries last for a longtime.
I often think that each and every computer needs a battery called CMOS battery. What is the role of that battery and how often should I change the battery. I want to knoe that does replacing this battery affects the BIOS of the computer anyway? I did not change the battery of my computer ever while I am using it for about five years. Does it worth?
CMOS battery are owned by each computer but it has neither any special utilization nor it affects so much to the BIOS of the computer when its time to replace it.
Actually CMOS stand for Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor. The CMOS battery exist in the motherboard of your computeer and primarily work to indicate the current date and time which is displayed in your computer. It is required just to maintain that timing in your computer. Even when you turn of your computer and don’t use it, the track of the time stilkl goes on your computer to keep the continue flow of time to maintain that actual time display in your computer.
Now how you will come to know that it’s time to replace your computer’s CMOS battery? Simply, when your computer starts to show you any false date and time, such as Jan 07, 1965 on the day it is Feb 18,2010 it does mean that it’s time to replace your battery. Even it doesn’t matter if you don’t replace your CMOS battery after it has been exploited. The only thing is that you must compromise with your machine not showing time.
Replacement of battery does not influence BIOS anyway besides the time matter but if there any customization you have configured in your BIOS you might lose it when you replace the battery.
Simlpy if I want to replace the CMOS battery of my desktop I need to turn off my computer and open the case. Then somewhere in the innermost part of my computer’s motherboard I would find the battery and I need to just replace it with the new one. In case I have to replace the battery of my laptop I will find it critical because the components in laptop are arranged critically and hard to reach but the thing is not uncommon one to do. Still there is a plus point that CMOS battery last much longer and sometime no requirement takes place to replace it even after the computer becomes older or no more utility of it remains.
